Reflection on the final lesson in simple harmonic motion involving damped harmonic oscillations.
The one thing that I am missing that would really help the students understand the final problem concepts is a simulation of the device. It should be fairly simple to construct one for the future using plywood, a hinge, and a spring. The objective of the lesson was to get the students to extend what we had covered in simple harmonic motion, specifically physical and torsional pendulums, to the situation where a hinged plank rests on a spring and it set into simple harmonic oscillation over small angles. I have tried to stress over the year that, rather than trying to just theorize their way through the problems, to experiment whenever possible. Having this apparatus would help them visualize and hopefully conceptualize the problem.
